Simon is a stop motion animation puppet, a character I designed and constructed for a project titled Personal Showcase, centred on creating a short film based on an original modern fable.
Simon is one of my most adventurous projects. Simon is 9” in height and 5” in width with an armature made from varied strength posable wire with structural support and a head made from Milliput, with the edition of Super Sculpey for the ears. The body was sculpted out of upholstery foam and the limbs are made from silicone which were cast directly onto the armature wire. A section within the stomach of the puppet was left without foam for the battery pack to be fitted, allowing me to light up the eyes from within the puppet. The eyes are 5mm 3.5 V pea bulbs powered by one AA battery and turned on/off using a slide switch inserted into the back of the puppet beneath the fur. The puppet’s fur is faux fur fabric that I styled with an eyebrow razor, acrylic paint and ink. The silicone limbs I styled with veins made from sewing thread, fingernails made from clear silicone sealant and blemishes using a mixture of silicone sealant and acrylic paint. The Milliput jaw is bolted on either side of the head to allow for movement of the mouth, with the addition of a posable tongue that is also supported by armature wire. Finally, the puppet’s mouth, ears and eyes are painted with Citadel acrylic paint.
